It could be said that S.S Rajamouli’s Baahubali created the genre of Fantasy in Indian cinema. Drawing inspiration from folk tales and mythology, the film showcased Baahubali and Bhallala Deva, men of almost superhuman strength who could decimate entire armies in battle. In just a few months since the film’s release however, we already have another fantasy film coming to theatres. And this time, the hero is a woman.
Rudhramadevi is the story of the warrior queen Rani Rudrama Devi who ruled over the Kakatiya dynasty in the 13th century. Starring Anushka Shetty in the titular role, the film showcases the life of one of the few female rulers in Indian history. It is a story worth telling.
t looks like director Gunashekar has chosen to present the film as a historical fantasy. Rani Rudrama Devi’s ally Gona Ganna Reddy, played by Allu Arjun, looks like he leapt straight out of a videogame. And that’s not a bad thing at all. We have been making historical films from the early days of Indian cinema but what we need now is fantasy cinema for a young audience who grew up watching Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
Rana Daggubati joins Allu Arjun as Veerabhadra, Rani Rudrama Devi’s husband, who has many heroic moments of his own. The real star, though, is Anushka Shetty who looks absolutely majestic as the warrior queen. Her screen presence is incredible. We cannot wait to watch her lead her armies into battle on the big screen. If Baahubali was all about male strength, Rudhramadevi is about a woman fighting for her place in a man’s world.
